Digital & Foundational Literacy: Equipping Fellows for a Digital World

As part of the ongoing JCTEF Transformation Program Cohort 1, Fellows recently participated in Session 04: Digital & Foundational Literacy, a session designed to strengthen their understanding of the digital environment and the capabilities required to function effectively in an increasingly technology-driven world.

The Transformation Program is not designed to rush participants into learning a particular skill. Rather, it takes a broader approach to human development—helping Fellows build the awareness, knowledge, mindset and foundational capabilities they need to make informed decisions about their personal and professional development.

Digital literacy is an important part of that foundation.

Understanding the Digital World

Technology has become part of almost every area of modern life. From communication and learning to work, business and access to information, digital tools continue to influence how people interact with the world around them.

The session provided Fellows with an opportunity to look beyond simply knowing how to use a phone or computer. They explored the role of digital tools, how technology is shaping the workplace, and how digital capabilities can influence productivity and opportunities.

The discussion also introduced Fellows to practical workplace technology and digital productivity tools that can support effective communication, collaboration and everyday work.

Staying Safe in the Digital Space

Digital literacy also involves understanding how to navigate the digital environment responsibly and safely.

Fellows explored important areas of digital safety and security, including the need to be more conscious of how they interact online, the information they share, and the risks that can come with using digital platforms and services.

As more activities move online, knowing how to use technology is only one part of being digitally capable. Knowing how to use it responsibly and safely is equally important.

Exploring Careers in the Digital Industry

Another important part of the session was an introduction to career paths within the digital and technology industry.

The technology industry offers a wide range of career possibilities, from software development and data-related fields to cybersecurity, digital marketing, design and other emerging areas.

However, having many options can also make it difficult to know where to begin.

Fellows were therefore encouraged to take time to understand their interests, strengths, abilities and aspirations before choosing a technology skill to pursue.

The goal is not simply to learn a skill because it is popular or because others are learning it. It is to begin understanding which areas align with who you are and the direction you want your career to take.

For Fellows who are interested in acquiring technology skills, this stage provides an opportunity to explore the different pathways available and begin preparing intentionally for the next stage of their development.

Anchoring the Session

The session was anchored by Chidimma Jacob Angel, Founder of JCTEF, with discussions focused on helping Fellows connect digital knowledge with practical development and future opportunities.

The conversation reinforced an important principle within the Transformation Program: development should be intentional.

Before acquiring a marketable skill, it is valuable to understand yourself, explore your options and make informed choices about the direction you want to pursue.

Building the Foundation

The Digital & Foundational Literacy session represents another step in the Fellows’ three-month development journey.

From self-discovery and personal development to digital literacy, workforce readiness, financial literacy and marketable skills, each stage of the Transformation Program is designed to contribute to a broader process of growth and preparation.

For our Fellows, the journey is not simply about completing classes. It is about developing the capacity to make better decisions, build relevant capabilities and move toward greater productivity.

We continue to build the foundation, one stage at a time.

Transformation precedes empowerment.
